There are others who would prefer to go to individual one-on-one piano lessons with a professional piano teacher. Either way you will soon discover that the essentials are the same.
There are several points the piano student should take into account:
Start at the beginning
Its really important that you start with the basics. find out all you can about the physical instrument itself such as where the notes are, how the pedals work etc. If you could learn a bit of basic theory of music and also a bit about how to read music so you will be well prepared. Set aside some time each day to practice, find a good piano teacher or a good home study course and you will be well prepared.

Pick the correct pieces to play
Its imperative that you get hold of some good piano music to practice. If you select pieces that are above your level you will find yourself struggling to learn them which will not help your playing and will demoralize you as well. You need to select simple, short pieces that you could play by memory if needed, this will make it simpler for you to perfect them. It can also be a good idea to learn a couple of pieces by ear, this is to say that you hear a song and try to copy it. You could try working out the chords or the melody or both. By learning to play by ear you will be developing listening skills which will be of great use to you later on.
Careful, things might become tricky
As you progress you will find that there comes a time when it will become a difficult and testing. The learning curve can become very steep somewhere between beginner and intermediate level. You will probably find it a bit of a struggle at times. When this occurs just stick with it and keep on with the practice as this is where most folks will give up. Don’t worry if you get bogged down and feel that you are not making any progress as this is a normal part of the process, rest assured that subconsciously you are learning and one day soon it will just all click as your brain and your hands suddenly start to cooperate.
Make it personal
Just as when you hear two artists do different versions of the same song and each sounds completely different, you can do the same with the piano pieces you are learning to play. Try and put your own expression into a piece and be adventurous by trying new things. This will not always be possible especially if you have a strict piano teacher but having a little fun whilst finding out how to learn the piano can be a good thing.
