How To Learn The Piano For Beginners

If you are a complete beginner or if you had a few lessons when you were a child and left it, to begin playing the piano or the keyboards you will have to take some type of lessons. Which ever applies to you, the way of learning remains the same.

Of the multiple different ways of teaching there are a lot of similarities common to them all. Even if you are practicing using electronic keyboards instead of a proper piano, the lessons you will get will be virtually the same. The goal of a lot of beginners is to be able to play a little in different styles, they might want to be able to play classical, jazz, pop etc and most would like to have the skills to play by ear as well as read a little music too. They might also want to learn how to accompany singers and other instrumentalist.

All of this may seem a little ambitious for a complete beginner but you really need to know your direction right from the very start. Within a relatively short period you will find that you can achieve all of the above.

I had the privilege of reviewing a home study course for piano and keyboards called ‘Piano For All’. The teaching methods they used in this course impressed me a lot.Fist off you are shown how to find all of the notes on the keyboard. This is gone through very quickly and then you are shown how to play an easy melody using all of your fingers. This melody is written in musical notation and as a simple keyboard diagram

This part of the lesson is done in very little time. Next you are taught the three notes you will need to be able to play a basic chord. To play the chord you are given a simple little rhythm to play. You are instructed to play the fist note of the chord an octave lower with your left hand giving you the bass. You are shown a new rhythm to follow involving using both hands and then suddenly you find that you are actually playing beginners piano and it sounds musical and isn’t difficult at all.

Play this chord for a while then move on and learn a couple of different chords. Once you know a handful of chords you can play them changing from one to another in order and you will realize that you are playing genuine piano songs or accompaniments. If you learn to play using this method you will discover that it is really quite easy and this will give you confidence in your playing leaving you with a taste for more. Moving on through the course you get shown some different rhythms and a few more tunes and chords. For each exercise you will see the notes you are playing written in keyboard diagrams and traditional musical notation. You will realize that you are suddenly playing keyboards or piano in much less time than you imagined.

As far as I’m concerned this is definitely one of the better methods of learning piano as it teaches you how to play by ear and how to read music too. It will also show you how to read music, how to play by ear and how to improvise.
